Lasers
Amendment to University Policy with effect from 1 Jan 2012: Users of Class 3B and 4 lasers are no longer required to attend Occupational Health for routine pre and post-employment eye tests. Emergency arrangements regarding suspected injuries remain unchanged. If you have any concerns regarding existing eye or skin conditions which may affect, or be affected by, work with lasers, please contact Occupational Health for advice.

Information for Departmental Laser Safety Officers, laser users and research supervisors:
Contact the Safety Office for copies of this booklet.
This provides basic essential information for working safely with lasers. For additional advice on laser safety please consult your Research Supervisor, Departmental Laser Safety Officer or the Radiation Protection Officer (Safety Office).
Section A of the Policy and Guidance contains information especially relevant to users of Class 3B and 4 lasers, section B gives specific information which may be useful in various applications and section C contains appendices for additional information.
Departmental Laser Safety Officers should be familiar with this document, and can refer users to relevant sections. Generally, as a minimum, Class 3B and 4 laser users should read section A in addition to local policy and procedure documents.

Laser Safety Training
Laser safety courses are run by the Safety Office on a termly basis. See course and briefing descriptionsfor details. Courses can also be arranged for specific groups of users. Contact the Safety Office if you need additional training, or have identified a group who require specific training.
If a Laser Safety Officer wishes to run a course within their department, please contact us prior to the course to discuss content and material can be provided if required.
