COSHH
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations set out a simple framework for controlling hazardous substances in the workplace. The main objective of the Regulations is to reduce occupational ill health by promoting safe working with potentially hazardous chemicals.
The requirements of the Regulations and their application in the University is contained in the Hazardous Substances Policy.
The Hazardous Substances Policy relates to the use of all hazardous substances within the University e.g. anything that is toxic, flammable, asphyxiant, a biological agent etc, from 'cradle to grave' and defines the basic legal requirements under all relevant legislation including the responsibilities for implementing this policy within departments.
The policy details:
- key steps to chemical hazard risk assessment
- the hierarchy of control measures for preventing or controlling exposure to hazardous substances
- the requirement for health surveillance
- arrangements to deal with accidents, incidents and emergencies
