Chemical Safety
Chemicals are everywhere and used in a wide range of applications throughout the University.
Most chemical exposures can be harmful to your health and safety. Depending on the toxicity and concentration, the effects can be immediate (like an acid burn) or long-term (like occupational cancer), and can sometimes be life-threatening. That's why it's crucial to control your exposure to hazardous substances.
The main regulations related to chemicals are the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH), which require employers to assess and manage the risks from hazardous substances at work, and the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR). DSEAR provides a framework for managing substances that pose significant risks, including flammable/explosive substances, oxidizers, gases under pressure, and corrosive substances.
The goal of chemical safety management is to develop systems that effectively control the risks to the health and safety of employees and others who may be affected. There is plenty of advice, guidance, and support available on all aspects of chemical safety.
