Liquid Nitrogen in Biological Labs
The following links are to the documents that deal with depletion of oxygen. This is relevant in departments/lab areas where liquid nitrogen is in use for biological storage and research in bulk form. It must be remembered that it is mandatory to have an operational fixed oxygen depletion monitor in laboratories/areas where significant quantities of liquid nitrogen are stored. What is significant will depend on the quantity, the room size (see below*). Please ensure that your risk assessments are suitable, sufficient and regularly reviewed.
In addition:
If you use a significant quantity of carbon dioxide (see below*) it is mandatory to have an operational carbon dioxide gas monitor.
NB - ANY carbon dioxide gas supplied from a bulk liquid gas tank IS a significant quantity.
