Training
Understand the training and knowledge you need to keep yourself and others safe
The University’s safety education and training policy explains the safety education required of everyone at the University.
Everyone must complete the health and safety education and training required by the University (and their Department or Institution) to meet statutory requirements. Staff, students, and others at the University must be given the time to do so by their Department/Institution and line manager.
Safety role holders
The Safety Office has developed a Safety Training Matrix detailing the training that those responsible for or who are appointed to one or more safety roles either must or should complete. The matrix indicates where refresher training is required and at what intervals. Should you have any questions please contact us.
New starters
Anybody new to the University, you should read:
- the health and safety induction (publication HSD065M is currently being updated), please contact us
- guidance on safety matters
New postgraduate students
New postgraduate students should read the Postgraduate Safety Courseguidance and complete the list of actions.
Supervisors and heads of groups
The individual safety record can be used to assist supervisors or heads of groups to ensure all their staff and students have received the necessary instruction and training they need in order to work safely.
The record is designed primarily for those who work in a laboratory environment, but it can be adapted for any type of work.
Training provided by the Safety Office
The Safety Office provides safety training and development opportunities for members of the University. Some of our courses are open to everyone, while other courses and briefings may only be available to those with specific safety roles. We include this information in the course descriptions.
As the University has a legal duty to provide health and safety training, we will inform Departments and Institutions about course and briefing attendance through the Departmental Safety Officer.
Support
If you would like any other help or support with safety training, including additional courses tailored to your Department, please contact us.
Staff in colleges and allied Institutions can attend Safety Office courses but there may be a fee for this. We can also provide tailored courses for colleges. Contact us for further details.
