Excusals Policy

The University Safety Policy states that the Head of Department, Faculty or Institution is responsible for safety in their own domain. For this reason, any request for excusal must come from the Head or someone who has a broad oversight of safety such as the Director of Graduate Education or the Departmental Safety Officer. The request must be made in writing (email or hard copy).

The Department or Institution is responsible for informing students that they have been excused from attendance.

The Department, Faculty or Institution must provide equivalent or better training for all students who are excused from attending.

Excusal for individual students

A request for excusal for an individual student should be sent to the Safety Office and should include the reason for the request and outline the training that the Department or Institution will provide.

Excusal for groups of students

  • Excusal from specific sessions
Requests for excusal from specific sessions for an entire group of students should be sent to the Director of Health and Safety and should include the reason for the request and outline the training that the Department or Institution will provide.
  • Block excusal from the entire course
Any request for a block excusal from the entire course, for postgraduate students who will be working in laboratories or in the field, will need support from the Director of Health and Safety and approval by the University Health and Safety Executive Committee.
